Featured Wines: America + Syrah = Egon

If the wine in this week's Featured Wines column tickle your fancy, you can order them directly from Jordan by email (JCarrier@everythingwine.ca) or find him in the Vintage Room of Everything Wine's newest location River District in South Vancouver (8570 River District Crossing).

America + Syrah = Egon

Of all the Ghostbusters, I think that Egon was both the most essential and the least appreciated, an assertion confirmed by the fact that you probably now have a separate browser window open to look up who Egon is. Don’t bother, I’ll tell you: Egon is American Syrah.

Actually Egon was played by the late great Harold Ramis, but their standings are analog: Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) is Cabernet Sauvignon, who gets the girl, the laughs, and the most screen time. Ray (Dan Aykroyd) is Pinot Noir, the cute-but-nerdy lightweight with flashes of brilliance. Winston (Ernie Hudson) is Zinfandel, the deep-thinking workhorse that does most of the driving in blends (but somehow never gets on the posters). Egon, like Syrah, is universally recognized as brilliant – he built all the gizmos they use, for crying out loud – but is never anyone’s first choice.

Why doesn’t Yankee Syrah get the same love as Cab or Pinot? It gets the same scores (or better in many cases), and it achieves the same huge weight and deep colour as Cab, especially in California. Everyone knows it’s amazing, everyone loves it when they drink it, but even in Washington State, where Syrah should rightly be the State Bird, winemakers have a hard time moving it, especially compared to Cab, which effortlessly flops out the winery door like runaway salmon.

No more. I plant a flag here and now for US Syrah, as a dynamic, electric, and regionally expressive grape that will henceforth get more attention on these pages, and more real estate in my cellar. Wines like these:

Shafer Relentless 2014, Napa Valley
The former Wine of the Year (Wine Spectator Top 100 2012) returns with muscle and grace, a beautiful, classic year for Syrah in Napa. Containing a small measure of Petit Sirah, everything here is deep and dark. Blackberries, black pepper, and black currant rolled up with violets and lavender and smoked with a pork belly (or something like that, I’m hungry). The wine enters your mouth in the same way that the Kool-Aid Man enters a house. This is objectively delicious and will only get better, the future of this wine is assured. My allocation is only 3 cases now, apologies if I don’t have quite enough for everyone again. 95 points Vinous, 95+ points Robert Parker, 3 cases available, $160.99 +tax

K Vinters “The Deal” 2014, Wahluke Slope
Another stellar Washington Syrah from the already-legendary 2014 vintage, but unlike its contemporaries like Force Majeure and Betz, The Deal is a) immediately drinkable and b) half the price. Made from the Sundance vineyard with indigenous yeasts by the Human-Falling-Space-Station known as Charles Smith, The Deal shows a good deal of herbs and blueberries with a great deal of spices and an even greater deal of pure power and body. What is doesn’t show is a ton of tannin (it’s there, but the huge body covers over it like a muffin-top), making it safe to dive into now, although by sheer concentration it will age just fine. We’ll be pouring this on Saturday at 3pm if you’d like to try. 95 points Robert Parker, 5 6-packs available, $66.49 +tax

Jonata “La Sangre de Jonata” 2013, Ballard Canyon, Santa Ynez Valley
Jonata is the answer, so long as the question is “what if Screaming Eagle made Syrah”? On the other side of the mountains from Santa Barbara, the white-hot and bone-dry Santa Ynez valley has been producing everything from ripe Cabs to plump Pinots (Sea Smoke being the best specimen), but the microclimate of Ballard Canyon has shown a remarkable ability with Rhône varietals, rooted in sand and boasting characteristically floral notes. Jonata, the sister winery to Screagle, cranks up the aromatics in their top Syrah (with 2% Viognier ‘cause we don’t want Viognier to feel bad) with peppery plum and soy notes amongst the flowers and the berries. Indeed, drinking Sangre de Jonata is like watching a badminton match between Savoury and Fruit, a really entertaining nose preceding a fierce frame with prominent tannins that may need to be talked down, over time, like The Hulk (“Sun’s gettin’ low, big guy”…). 97 points Vinous, 96 points Robert Parker, 6 bottles available, $236.99 +tax

Try This, Cellar That - Le Vieux Pin Syrah

About seven years ago, Black Sage Bench's Le Vieux Pin began to re-brand itself as a Rhome Valley homage and slowly replaced their popular Burgundy varietal wines with multiple Syrah labels and other Rhone-inspired wines. Here are two Syrah releases from 2017 to compare; one for now and one for later.

Try This...

Le Vieux Pin 2015 "Cuvée Violette" Syrah - $29
Sourced from multiple, distinct Southern Okanagan Valley sub-appellations and blended together with 1% Roussanne to create a feminine Syrah with cherry and black raspberry fruit, aromatic, floral notes and a layer of sensual, savoury characters: white pepper, vanilla, green olives and sweet incense throughout.

Cellar That...
Le Vieux Pin 2014 Équinoxe Syrah - $24
Always in the debate for BC's best Syrah, this year's Équinoxe benefited from the near-perfect 2014 vintage (for big reds) creating a stunning wine of refinement and powerful elegance. Densely packed, yet approachable with layers of black cherry, ripe blackberry, white pepper, red plum, pipe tobacco, nectar, mild licorice and violet notes on the enchanting nose and the spicy, cola'n'cocoa nibs infused palate where ultra-fine, slightly smoky tannins and smooth, berry acidity add structure and length.

Recap

Though the World Cup soccer game was a little one-sided in favour of Chile's impressive squad, the wine match was far more competitive with the Australia Shiraz squeaking out a victory thanks to it's edge in complexity and typicity - you certainly know you're drinking an Aussie (sourced) Shiraz. Neither wine, however, expressed a sense of specific terroir as reflected by their sub-90pt scores. Both Syrah/Shiraz are well-made for mass-produced wines but lack that unique, identifying qualify that one hopes to find. The Layer Cake entry received the food-friendly nod thanks to its vein of peppercorn spice on the palate that screams 'Steak!", but really, you can't go wrong with either wine.

Best of BC: Syrah / Shiraz

Quickly becoming BC's signature red with more and more top prizes going to producers creating delicious, cellar-worthy wines from this Rhone Valley varietal. Many new plantings have been made over the past few years and new Syrah/Shiraz offerings are coming onto the market this summer - 2011 could be the "Year of Syrah".

A variety of styles are produced in BC, the best, however, seem to involve a significant time in new French oak - a practice that many modern Rhone Valley producers are following as well.
$20 and below:

Cassini Cellars 2008 Tuxedo Shiraz - $15
This offering from Cassini is far from complex, but satisfies the palate admirably with classic Shiraz flavours. Good value. Where to buy: Direct from winery, private and VQA stores.

$30 and below:

See-Ya-Later-Ranch 2008 Rover - $25
A solid follow-up to the excellent 2007 vintage which may not be quite as impressive in its youth, but possesses the same fortitude to deliver, over time, similar concentrated and brooding dark cherry, spicy pepper, toasted oak and licorice characters as its predecessor. Where to buy: Direct from winery and VQA stores.

Stag's Hollow Winery 2009 Syrah - $28
A blend of co-fermented 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier, produced from fruit from grown in Osoyoos and Penticton, resulting in a bold and adventurous Syrah that is approachable in its youth yet will hold nicely over the next 3-4 years with its integrated tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Where to buy: Direct from winery and VQA stores.

La Frenz Winery 2008 Shiraz - $28
The concentrated fruit aromas and flavours give the impression of sweetness on the intense nose and dry palate, masking any hotness from the alcohol. Where to buy: Direct from winery and private wine shops.

Poplar Grove Winery 2007 Syrah - $30
This is a serious Syrah, dark and brooding, with a good expression of terroir and spicy pepper notes. Oak treatment enhances the nose and palate without overshadowing the fruit characters. Where to buy: Direct from winery.

Nichol Vineyard and Estate Winery 2008 Syrah - $30
Dark cherry is prominent on the nose and dry palate. Pepper spice is present but plays a supporting role in this Syrah, mostly showing in the long and balanced finish. Where to buy: Direct from winery and private wine shops.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards 2007 Oldfield Series Syrah - $30
The palate is dry with good tannins and natural acidity - just the right amount of bite. Juicy flavours of dark fruit, vanilla, leather and toasted oak with a chalky, smoky texture. The finish is moderate and balanced with lingering pepper spice. Where to buy: Direct from winery

$40 and below:

Cassini Cellars 2008 Syrah - $34
With good continuity from the complex nose to the dry palate, the flavour profile oozes brooding, dark cherry and black berry fruits with savoury flavours of spice box, licorice, scorched earth and toasted oak. Where to buy: Direct from winery and VQA stores.

Sandhill  2007 Small Lots Syrah - $35
Winner of the 2009 "Red Wine of the Year" award from Wine Access Magazine. Produced from fruit grown in the Phantom Creek Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. Where to buy: Direct from winery and VQA stores.

Jackson-Triggs 2006 Sunrock Vineyards Shiraz - $35
Lovely new world Shiraz with big fruit flavours but never over-done or jammy. 2007 vintage has already been released. Where to buy: Direct from winery, BCLDB and VQA stores.
Icon Score

Painted Rock Estate Winery 2008 Syrah - $40
This is the second vintage of Syrah released from Skaha Bench producer Painted Rock Estate Winery and it takes a turn from the terroir-driven 2007 vintage towards a more oak-driven wine with the 2008 version. Where to buy: Direct from winery, private wine shops and VQA stores.

Above $40:

Le Vieux Pin 2008 Syrah - $45
This Syrah, from 3-4 year old vines, has 4% Viognier added during fermentation, in the form of pressed grape skins, to lift the aromatic qualities of the nose. Dark cherry, black pepper oil, oak and a touch of cola represent decent complexity in this inaugural vintage. Where to buy: Direct from winery and VQA stores.
Icon Score

Le Vieux Pin 2008 Équinoxe Syrah - $70
The new "Équinoxe" line of wines replaces the "Reserve" level as the top-tier wines for Le Vieux Pin. The winery selected 3 barrels as the best of the best for their 2008 Syrah and deemed it worthy of the Équinoxe name. Only 70 cases have been produced and no release date is yet listed but expect a fall 2011 launch. Where to buy: Direct from winery
