About Oyama Sausage Co.: Oyama Sausage was founded by John and Christine Van Der Lieck in 2001. Located in Granville Island's Public Market, the shop carries a wide selection of fresh sausages and handmade pâtés, as well as cured salamis and hams. John, whose ancestry includes five generations of Dutch and German charcuterie makers, has cultivated partnerships with local farmers and suppliers to ensure he works with only the best ingredients. He experiments with fusions between traditional charcuterie (including recipes that have been in his family for generations) and international cuisine, drawing from the rich diversity of food cultures in Vancouver to create modern and exciting flavour combinations that reflect the multicultural mosaic of the city.

Monthly Picks: August '14 - WOSA

For August's monthly wine picks post we're showcasing a few wines from South Africa. If you're not familiar with the well-priced wines of the Rainbow Nation, look for in-store tastings and special discounts in 60 BC Liquor Stores throughout BC from August 5th to September 1st.

Nederburg Wines 2012 Winemaster's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - $13
Few Cabernet Sauvignon in the under $15 category produce as pleasant a nose as the Nederburg Winemaster's Reserve does. Vibrant blackberry, nibs candy and vanilla-coke aromas are supported by an even blanket of sweet, oak spice and blooming flowers.
Icon Score

Thelema Mountain Vineyards 2011 Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc - $14
This South African Sauvignon Blanc opens with a generous nose of crab apple, honeydew and lemon curd aromas. Pleasantly rich, thanks to extended lees contact, coating your palate with juicy melon flavours before the tangy citrus fruit and cool mineral elements cut through, leaving the finish dry with lingering citrus peel and spice notes.

Flagstone 2012 Longitude - $14
Vibrantly intense, dark and red fruit aromas and fresh, Chocolate Mint notes greet you on the nose of this well-priced, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend (50%, 30% and 20%, respectively) from the Western Cape.
Icon Score

KWV Winery 2011 Roodeberg - $14
The middleweight palate offers an easy-drinking profile of ubiquitous 'dark red fruit' and sweet oak, licorice and light spice flavours. Not overly complex or long, but decent balance and good "drinkability", especially for the under $15 price-point.
Icon Score

The Painted Wolf Wines 2012 The Den Cabernet Sauvignon - $15
Bursts out of the glass with attractive blackberry, cassis, cola, menthol and oak aromas. Palate offers similar, juicy flavours until a wave of wild berry acidity floods the fruit, lightening the body, creating more of a middleweight Cabernet, better suited for spicy stews and leaner meats, than for thick, marbled steaks.

Graham Beck Wines 2011 The Game Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - $19
Over-delivers for the price with a uniquely South African Cabernet Sauvignon blend of smoky incense, mocha and spicy plum fruit aromas on the feminine nose. Acid is quite fresh, keeping the mouth feel vibrant and alive, while graphite tannins help frame the fruit and add some structure. Finish is balanced, but moderate in length.

Try This, Cellar That - South African Cab Sauv

This week we feature Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa:

Try This...

Graham Beck Wines 2011 The Game Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - $18
Over-delivers for the price with a uniquely South African Cabernet Sauvignon blend of smoky incense, mocha and spicy plum fruit aromas on the feminine nose. Acid is quite fresh, keeping the mouth feel vibrant and alive, while graphite tannins help frame the fruit and add some structure.

Cellar That...

Nederburg Wines 2011 Manor House Cabernet Sauvignon - $19
Offers a pleasing mixture of ripe berry fruit, mocha, smoky oak and allspice aromas. The palate has a hint of residual sugar, thus, not truly 'dry', and the fruit from the nose takes a back seat to the smoky oak and mineral flavours on offer while smooth, mannered tannins mingle with wild berry acidity adding structure. A refreshingly balanced Cabernet Sauvignon for the under $20 price-point and one with which you can easily afford to experiment with mid-to-long term cellaring to reveal mature Cabernet flavours and further tannin integration.

WCOW: France VS. South Africa

To celebrate the 2010 World Cup of Soccer in South Africa we are hosting a few nation VS. nation competitions of our own whenever two major wine producing countries meet.

Match 3 has France taking on host nation South Africa in a Syrah/Shiraz showdown. Both are warm climate wines. One is from a single vineyard the other is a blend of multiple terroir.

France's Wine: Paul Mas Estate 2008 Syrah/Viognier
Region: Vin de Pays d'Oc
Alcohol: 13.8%
Cost: $16.99
Notes: Small amount of Viognier added for aromatics and colour. Dry, single vineyard, warm climate Syrah with good concentration.

South Africa's Wine: La Motte 2007 Shiraz
Region: Franschhoek Valley
Cost: $16-18
Alcohol: 13.9%
Notes: This wine is a good example of blending for flavour characteristics from unique terroirs.
Full Review

The Conclusion:

Complexity (Nose): La Motte
Complexity (Palate): La Motte
Food Friendly: Paul Mas Estate
Concentration: La Motte
Expression of Terroir: Paul Mas Estate
Value: La Motte
Winner: La Motte

The La Motte Shiraz from South Africa takes the match just as the South Africans did in their final group A game. Sadly France heads home without a win in football or at the World Cup of Wine. The La Motte Shiraz over-delivers for the price and, ironically, at times reminds me of a Southern Rhone Syrah. Details on the full line-up of La Motte wines is available on their website: www.la-motte.com/

Next Match: The final round-robin match-up, Chile VS Spain in a battle of Rose. Then... who will face-off in the round of 16?

WCOW: South Africa Single Red Varietal Nationals

Country: South Africa
Manager: Hugh Carter

South Africa is growing in prominence as a wine region in the West. It has long been a prolific supplier of bargain wines to North America while its higher-end wines remained harder to track down. This trend seems to be diminishing with more quality product coming to our shores. Great to see as SA offers unique wines like Pinotage and does admirably with classic European varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine #1: K.W.V. Cathedral Cellars 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Paarl
Cost: $19.99
Notes: Smooth with good fruit concentration and a beautifully complex nose.
Score: 88
Full Review: Follow Link

Wine #2: Beyerskloof 2007 Pinotage
Region: Stellenbosch
Cost: $15.99
Notes: The nose exhibits band-aid (in a good way) and coffee aromas which continue onto the palate with notes of strawberry. Light and flavourful.
Score: 87
Full Review: Follow Link

Conclusion: The Cathedral Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon takes this round due to its excellent complexity and silkiness in the glass.
