Media Release: Honour BC Wine at Home

From the BC Wine Institutes Media Release

Kelowna, BC –  As we continue to navigate these uncertain times surrounding COVID-19, BC wineries are doing what they can to ensure the community and industry remain strong, which is why the Wines of British Columbia welcome the return of BC Wine Month in April to encourage buying local while respecting physical distancing.

Once again, the BC government has proclaimed April as the official province-wide wine month, encouraging all British Columbians to enjoy 100 per cent BC wines from their homes.

“Communities all around the province continue to rally together by supporting local businesses and choosing to Buy BC products,” says Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “Many BC winemakers depend on sales within our province to keep their businesses running, and our support for them and all BC farmers and businesses during this pandemic will help the resiliency and future of food and beverage production in British Columbia.”

With 929 vineyards across the province, BC’s wine industry is doing what it can to protect the more than 12,000 jobs BC wineries support. More than 175 wineries, along with local retailers and restaurants, are stepping up to make it easier to enjoy BC wine by offering free shipping, delivery, virtual tastings, charitable donations and curbside pick up for British Columbians. The BC Wine Institute launched a dedicated webpage to highlight these promotions and provide a simple way for wine lovers to find BC wines and engage with their local wineries online.

"It is more important than ever to support local,” says Miles Prodan, President & CEO of the BC Wine Institute. “And while tasting rooms are closed for visitation, wineries remain open for business and are taking necessary precautions to make BC wines accessible for British Columbians while ensuring the safety and well-being of their communities, staff, families and customers. We invite wine lovers to experience BC wineries virtually in honour of BC Wine Month.”

A proud supporter of the local community, growers, suppliers and winemakers, Save-On-Foods is a key retail partner for BC Wine Month. April also marks the fifth anniversary of Wines of British Columbia at Save-On-Foods stores.

“By partnering with more than 175 BC wineries and producers, Save-On-Foods offers the world’s largest selection of BC VQA Wines in 21 Wines of British Columbia at Save-On-Foods stores,” says Steve Moriarty, Director, Save-On-Foods. “We take immense pride in the sale and promotion of more than 1200 different wines produced right here in British Columbia. Our customers have grown to appreciate the distinct quality and unique freshness that comes from local wineries, and we continue to grow and support the industry.”

Save-On-Foods will support BC Wine Month through in-store signage and displays, and BC Wine Month billboards will be displayed in various regions of BC and Alberta throughout the month of April.

Vote! The Best of BC Wine Country Awards

From the Wine BC's media release:

BRITISH COLUMBIA - The Best of BC Wine Country Awards are back - a crowd-sourced online survey curated by the BC Wine Institute launches today inviting the public to vote on their favourite BC wine experiences from specific “Best of” categories related to BC wine and food tourism.

From Monday, July 23 through August 17, the Best of BC Wine Country Awards will generate authentic recommendations from the public on categories including: Best of BC Wine; Best of BC Place; and Best of BC Experience. Within these, 12 sub-categories are offered for each of BC’s unique wine regions!

“We are excited to bring back the Best of BC Wine Country Awards for a second year to encourage visitors to share their favourite experiences while touring BC wineries this summer,” notes Maggie Anderson Communications and Content Director of the BC Wine Institute. “Whether it’s for the experience, the award-winning wines, the local food, the people or the scenic views, we want to know first-hand from winery-goers what keeps bringing them back.”

Integrated this year are BC wine give-aways, offering voters the chance to experience the Best of BC Wine Country by winning one of three prizes: (1) Best of BC Wine gift basket; (2) An overnight stay at a Best of BC Winery Accommodation or (3) Dinner for two at a Best of BC Winery Restaurant. All they need to do is vote and share their excitement for #BestofBC18 on social media.

“Here in BC, they are essentially the people’s choice awards of wine. Winners are selected by consumers – not wine experts.” says Claire Newell, travel expert and best-selling author of Travel Best Bets. “My friends and I voted last year over a glass of our favorite BC wine with our tablets or smartphones in-hand. I expect more of my friends will join this year because there are prizes to win!”

With 276 BC grape wineries open to the public, more than 74 winery restaurants and 16 regional wine trails throughout the province, download the Wines of British Columbia new Trip Planner App and start exploring the award-winning wines available in your backyard. Have your say in what makes BC a world-class wine destination, and vote for your top picks for a chance to experience the Best of BC Wine Country.

Awards are presented for the Okanagan Valley, Similkameen Valley, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands and other regions including: Thompson Valley; Shuswap; Lillooet; Kootenays; Prince George. Winners will be published on WineBC.com and #BestOfBC18 prize winners will be announced on September 13.

News: BC Wine Institute responds to CFIA Blended in Canada Wine Labelling update

March 12, 2018 - From a BCWI Media Release

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) today announced the approval of new wine label designations to replace “Cellared in Canada”, effective immediately.

Replacing the current label designation “Cellared in Canada from imported and/or domestic wines” is “international blend from imported and domestic wines”, for imported wines. For domestically-produced wines, the new term is “international blend from domestic and imported wines”.

British Columbia Wine Institute’s (BCWI) Board of Directors’ request to the Canadian Vintners Association (CVA) for a review of the “Cellared in Canada” Interim Order contributed to the CVA-led industry-wide consultation in October 2016, and CFIA’s consultation with the public and industry in June 2017.

BCWI supports the update of labelling for BC-produced blended wine. Truth-in-labelling and authenticity certification are cornerstones to our BC VQA Wine program. A wine label tells consumers what they are buying and what they are drinking. It is important the label accurately identifies the origin of the wine.
